Maintaining a Coffee Maker

This blog is to help those how to take care and clean a coffee maker the right way. This is going to give a more detailed description of what to do to keep your coffee maker in working condition.  It needs to be maintained on a regular basis to keep the coffee being processed fresh with great flavors. The leftover coffee in the maker can make the coffee taste different, almost sour and rotten. Minerals can also form in the coffee maker if tap water is used. This can affect the water flow in your maker. The inside needs to be cleaned once per month with a mixture of vinegar and water. The mixture will be half vinegar and half water, the amount depending on how many cups your coffee maker can make. It will be placed where you put your water in. A clean filter will be put in and the maker needs to be run like you would for a normal cup of coffee. After being brewed allow the mixture to sit in the pot for about 10 minutes to clean it and allow the machine to cool. The mixture can be poured out in the sink and these steps should be repeated again and until the vinegar smell disappears during the cycles. The water can be tasted to make sure no vinegar remains, but that can be risky because vinegar doesn’t taste good. Dishwashing liquid can be used instead of vinegar. The same steps can be used but for every 2 cups of vinegar, 1 drop of the dishwashing liquid can be used. Specific coffee maker cleaners can be used. All the removable parts of the coffee maker can be cleaned once a week though. They can be soaked in any of the cleaning solutions talked about and a washrag or toothbrushes with baking soda can be used for all the crevices. My father has used canned air to get dust out of the inside of the coffee maker. It is also very important to replace any cracked or broken parts, especially if the glass pot is broken because we do not want there to be leaks. If any cords are burned they should also be replaced. It can take a lot of work to keep a coffee maker clean, but it depends on how you want your coffee to taste to let you know when you should clean it. For those who want optimum flavor I do recommend cleaning all removable parts once a week and cleaning the complete coffee maker once a month. Some people who are busy or who aren’t concerned about the different tasting coffee can wait longer/ have more time between cleaning everything.
